I. Special Issue: Japanese Public Opinion
Public opinion plays a vital role in many aspects of governance: it influences voting behavior, politicians’ actions, and policy choices. As such, a long tradition of scholarship exists, both in Japan and aboard on this theme. Articles in this special issue contribute to our understandings of the Japanese public opinion by employing innovative methods and providing novel insights. Iida’s article studies how mass media influences the formation of public opinion toward foreign countries, specifically North and South Korea. Article by Ohmura and Miwa connect the public opinion with elite-level politics; Ohmura investigates the cycle of linkages among the public opinion, party policy, and the policy outcomes, while Miwa studies the value preferences among voters and politicians.
