JPSA 2026 General Assembly & Annual Conference
The Theme of the Plenary Session
The theme of the 2026 plenary session is The Essence of Contemporary Crises. The aim is to reexamine the turning points and choices in world politics in the first quarter of the 21st century. In today’s world, we observe a diverse array of events that undermine the very basis of liberal democracies, such as political polarization, the decline of mainstream political parties, the fall of “liberal” politics, the rise of authoritarianism, and the destabilization of the postwar international order. The session seeks to offer perspectives from which to reconsider the nature of crises before us— or even the very question of what is in crisis— in thinking about how to rebuild the domestic foundations of liberal democracy and the international order. By revisiting the core features of the problems we face today with a longer analytical horizon and situating them in a historical context, we hope to deepen the discussion and explore a path forward for democracy at home and abroad.
